THE CASE OF THE MISSING BLOGGER

What's that you say?  You missed us, did you?  Alright, alright, I'll get to the explanation...yes, I'm a bit embarrassed that the last blog was dated May 4th, but take it easy on me...there are many, many reasons for that, really.  You see, since I've been off work (well, "paid" work that is), I've been home with two very busy little boys.  And these aren't just any ole regular little boys, did I mention how busy they are?  Between Tball, living at the pool, 1/2 day preschool/pick-ups/drop-offs/carpools, a record number of trips to the pediatrician in a 2 month span, a new camera that I can't seem to figure out how to download on this computer, and an x-ray/cast (more to come on that)...this could go on for a while.  Anyway, when I finally have a moment to myself at night, this blog is the last thing I think about.  Who am I kidding'?  I've completely forgot about it!  I know, I know, it's not about me...the world is just waiting on the edge of their seats to know what the Crouch boys are up to, I get it!  So, I'll try my best to give you a picture of what this summer looked like...

and...the cast...

100_0685Yes...it looks pitiful...and really cute all at the same time.  The truth is, save the sympathy, the kid is in no real pain.  Honestly.  I caught him twice today climbing on top of the kitchen table and I can't even count how many times he got on top of the coffee table.  Did I mention he still runs just as fast with the cast as he does without one?  He's barely noticed he has it on, other than stopping to show it off to random strangers by pointing down at it and saying "new shoooooooooo."

What happened, you ask?  Well, I don't want to mention any names, but we have this older brother who lives here with us.  This older brother has been teaching Kellen for quite some time now that it's awesome to jump down stairs - against his parent's wishes, of course.  So, last week, baby K decided he would jump from the top stair of the basement...I caught him, just in time...but he had jumped about 4 or 5 and landed on bare feet, fracturing two bones in the top of his foot.  I wish I could say lesson learned, but I'm afraid that's not the case.  I have a feeling I am getting the first real taste of life with boys!

Stay tuned this week for two REALLY BIG ANNOUNCEMENTS...get excited!!!

COLLIER AT THE BAT

Collier was selected in the draft this year!  He was taken first round by the Mets...the Hikes Point Mets, that is.  Although he's only four, there are times we have been so proud of him it's almost embarrassing.  For example, first game...he was playing pitcher and caught a line drive!  His coach said afterwards that he didn't expect to see an out made all year, let alone the first game...yeah, that's our boy!  Here's a look at the line up...

April 2009 022

April 2009 025
His favorite part of the game is batting.  He's so anxious when he gets to the plate, that the coach always has to hold his bat while putting the ball on the Tee to avoid getting hit!  He's quite the little superstar in this area too...when he gets up to bat, all the coaches yell, "Back up...good hitter!"  Yeah, that's our boy!  See what I mean?  If we're this proud at age 4, how bad is it going to get?April 2009 026
Base running is another story...he often has to be directed by the coaches on where to run next...after first base, he typically runs to the right field foul pole instead of second base...oh well, he can't excel at EVERYTHING!

LET'S BACK UP A LITTLE...

The weekend before Easter, we headed to Northern KY to watch Tia and Ryan say their "I Do's!"
For those of you who don't know Tita (as Collier likes to call her), she's my BFF from high school and we've remained very close since (going on 17 years now...wow, that makes me look old)!!  Anyway, everything was lovely, from the bride, to the wedding, to the reception!  And now, I present to you Mrs. Henson...

Collier and his single friend, Thomas, tried their luck at catching the garter...

They were a little short this year...maybe next time!  Collier and Kellen also pulled out some dance moves that may never be duplicated (at least we hope not, since they got their daddy's sense of rhythm...or lack thereof).  Nonetheless, they entertained the crowd all night and a good time was had by all!

EASTER DETOX PROGRAM

This year, we're sad to finally put the Easter baskets away for two very specific reasons:

1.  We can't use one of our favorite and most effective phrases anymore, "If you don't stop that, I'm going to call the Easter bunny!" (Is it too early to start threatening with Santa Claus??)
2.  No more in house Easter egg hunt drills (which have kept the boys busy and content for an entire month!)  Who knew they would NEVER grow tired of it!!

The silver lining in all of this, you ask?  The Easter Detox Program, which starts tomorrow!
You see, jelly beans, chocolate, bubble gum, suckers, etc. do strange things to 1 and 4 year old little boys.  When given too much (not because we have allowed it, but because they have learned to hide candy and bring it out as needed when they have withdrawal symptoms...which seems like every 5 minutes) they begin climbing the walls, bouncing on couches, making loud screeching noises, talking in strange voices and they don't take any breathes in between what seems like endless hours of talking, talking, talking, singing, more talking!

As you can see, they're not taking this Detox thing real well...this is the first phase...the sugar crash...
April 2009 014

Not to worry though, it looks much worse than it really is!  Most kids usually fully recover from this. The only side effects include acting out, fits, back talking, crying for candy, etc.  But again, we have it under control.  We have an area specifically designed for "time out" where it follows with a brief counseling session.  We'll keep you updated on their progress.
I don't want to leave you with such an alarming image, so let me close with some happier times from the weekend...coloring Easter eggs (and hands) and egg hunting!  Enjoy!

MORE GUATEMALA STORIES

I meant to post more from my journal, but we received an email this week that was so touching.  I wanted to share it because it shows God's hand in all of this...
It is from Chris Mooney, a missionary we worked with all week from Bethel Ministries.  He is referring to a woman and her 5 young children who we met while in Guatemala and dropped off food and clothing to her and her family...it is her side of the story...

"The morning that they were going to visit this family the mother had been praying about what to do because she had lost her job and only had 300Q (about $37 American dollars) to her name.  Her plight was this -  the school was asking for money and she also had no food in the house and as she sat there praying to God what do I do...Do I buy food and have my child go to school with no money or do I send her with the money and have no food?  Just then there was a knock on the door and when she opened it there was all those gringos (Americans) with food and on top of that they had brought clothing too and in two days her daughter was going to be celebrating her birthday...God had provided all!!  All I can say is way to go God!! Just makes you want to love him even more!"

Wow!  I've said it so many times, and I can never say it enough...GOD IS SO GOOD!!!  This woman felt so amazed by God looking out for her, but had no idea how much she truly blessed our lives!  We learned so much about trusting God in Guatemala...really trusting him!

HIS GRACE IS ENOUGH

We returned from Guatemala this past Wednesday around 11:30 pm and are still recovering on sleep and still trying to "process it all."  I would love to write and sum up the entire trip, but that's nearly impossible!  We have so many stories and so much to say, but where do we begin?
It was an amazing trip for both of us, one that we hope to repeat very soon (and hope to talk some of you into joining us!!).  It was life changing, eye opening and so inspiring!  God is so good!  We felt his presence in every moment of this journey!  Thank you again for all your prayers and support...we felt your prayers the entire week and could feel God's hand upon us!!  We truly can't say thank you enough!!

Instead of trying to give you one big summary (and believe me, it would go on for days!), we are going to share a few stories and some of my journal entries from the trip.  We would love to show you all the pictures and tell you all the stories, but there are just too many to post on this blog...so give us a call or come visit...we would love to share it all!

Guatemala 2009 071

This is from my journal, Day 2 of the trip...

We are in another country, but somehow it feels much more dramatic than that, almost like another planet.  It doesn’t make me feel ashamed to be an American, but ashamed of the way we live.  I have never seen such poverty in my life.  You often see these images on TV, but how easy it becomes to separate yourself from it and not let it affect you.  But when you’re in it, really in it, like we were today, it is impossible to separate yourself from it.  I will never forget this experience; I will never get over it.  My heart aches for the way these people live.  I have so much to say, but am having such a hard time processing it all and getting it all out.  It’s almost like I fear I won’t do justice by trying to explain it.  It is so real, so raw, and so unexplainable.  It is a hard life here in Guatemala, there is no denying that.  They wear it on their faces…they are the faces of poverty.

As we went from house to house for food/clothing distribution today, the stories were all very different, all so tragic.  The only similarity is that somehow in the midst of all this heartache, they have found God, they all praise Him, and they all say over and over how truly blessed they are!  Wow!  They praise Him in the midst of circumstances that we can’t possibly fathom!

The first home was in a very rural area.  We had to use 4-wheel drive and had to stop so they could move an ox out of the way (and yes, I did just say there was an ox in the road!!)  When we pulled up, the children came running out.  It was the home of Maria and her children.  Her husband was recently killed when he was struck by a car.  The children were so beautiful!!  They were all smiling and just beaming with God’s love.  They were so dirty from head to toe, without shoes, they had dirt caked under their nails, their clothes were filthy, and they had snot and dirt on their faces.  Yet, through all of this, you couldn’t help but notice how beautiful they were and that they were smiling from ear to ear in the midst of all this poverty!  Maria showed us their home…it was surrounded by garbage, clothing hanging on lines, you could smell the raw sewage, there were chickens running all around.

We dropped a large bag full of rice, black beans, sugar, coffee, noodles, vitamin drink, cooking oil, etc. for her and her children (this typically lasts about a week).  We gave them clothing and shoes.  The smallest boy, who was about 2, was so excited about his shoes that he kept looking down at them and wiggling his toes…he couldn’t walk a straight line because he stared down at those shoes the entire time, so excited to have on shoes!!!  I pat the 7 year old on the head and gave him a smile.  He quickly made a noise like he was in pain and leaned over to show me a large wound on his scalp.  It was about an inch and a half long, a huge, black scab.  I asked him what happened and he went on to explain that the 2 year old had been playing with a machete and hit him over the head with it.  I still sit here in disbelief every time I tell this story or read it over again…I can’t come to grips with it…it haunts me…he was playing with a machete.  No toys anywhere to be seen, nothing except the clothes on their backs and the dirt at their feet.  But this is where God comes in….all their hope lies in him!  All their strength lies in Him!  They completely depend on Him!  In the midst of this poverty, they have absolutely nothing, but they have Him!  And it is enough…his grace is sufficient!  How powerfully that speaks to me!

SPRING TRYOUTS...

Who made the team, you ask?
Just view the photo roster below...
March 2009 013
Although big brother prefers baseball, Kellen feels his full-back skills come pretty naturally...along with his eating habits.  Collier on the other hand, is attempting to become the first bare foot major leauger.
March 2009 015
As you can see on their faces, Collier and Gavin were not happy about getting beat by a 14 month old.  Better luck next time boys!  Eat your Wheaties!  And if there are any leftovers, Kellen wants them.
March 2009 018
A little post-game stretching always keeps you from waking up stiff in the morning...

See ya'll at the next bowl game!

SPRING HAS SPRUNG & WE'RE TOO TIRED FOR WORDS!

We officially have Spring fever!!!  It has been beautiful here in the 'ville the last two days.  Yesterday, it was 70 degrees and today hit 75!   I would leave the usual commentary for each picture, but as you can see from the last few posts, we don't have much to say these days.  Not that we don't want to, or have good intentions early in the day of the great posts we can compose about the days events...believe me, I would love to go on and on about how much they bless my life and how cute and funny I think my kids are...but to be quite honest, it's already an hour past my bedtime and we're just plain worn out.  Playing outside from morning 'til almost dark two nights in a row, chasing two wild boys, need I say more?  We'll just let the pics speak for themselves...all for the fans...we do it for the fans...
